Where to drink in downtown La Paz (2026)

La Paz is a drinking town in the best possible sense. Not a party town — a lingering town. Days here end slowly: a walk on the Malecón as the day cools, and then somewhere good to sit, with something cold in hand and no particular reason to leave.

Colibri Centro sits in the middle of it all — a block off the Malecón on Belisario Domínguez, one of the best streets in the city for eating and drinking. These are the places we actually send our friends and guests. Most are a short walk from our front door.

Start with coffee

Café Bélier is just down our street — pour-over espresso and coffee, a couple of seats inside, and cute umbrellas over a little spot out front with a few snacks to go with. Doce Cuarenta is the city's beloved coffee institution: proper espresso, a pastry case worth planning around, and a big, buzzy room that people post up and work from all day — not just a morning stop. And Amelier 21, in Centro, might be our top pick of the bunch — exceptional croissants, fresh bread and sweets, great coffee, air-conditioning inside and picnic tables out, and genuinely friendly service.

Beer, and the daytime hang

When the day tips toward happy hour, start at Harker, right on the Malecón — two second-story bars with a pulley running between them, cold local beer, cocktails, and a game usually on. The food's a real draw too: the chicken-and-avocado wrap and the burger both over-deliver. Downstairs and next door, Mechudo Brewing pours its own beers in a casual, easy hangout. A little further out, Bermejo Casa Cervecera is the bigger brewery a lot of people make their spot — roomy and made for settling in. Coyota is a favorite for an outdoor hang — a great location with a wide selection of beers and cocktails. And Kiliki is the local move: a little shop where people gather on the sidewalk out front, drinks in hand — the michelada is perfect on a hot afternoon, though the crowd really builds from sunset onward.

Wine, two ways

Sonset Wine Bar sits on a busy street and does the slightly-bougie thing beautifully — a cute room and a thoughtful list by the glass. Salud is our pick of the two: welcoming, casual, a touch more hipster, with indoor-outdoor seating that makes it easy to stay a while.

Mezcal, with reverence

Mezcalería La Miserable is the one for agave — flights, a serious mezcal reputation, and a room that gets packed on weekends. Ask for a recommendation, sip it slowly, and don't you dare shoot it. Tucked at the back of Biznaga, Árbol opens on weekends with amazing mezcal drinks, good music, and even better vibes — worth seeking out.

For a proper cocktail

El Buen Bar punches well above its size — really nice drinks and some of the warmest service in town. DIOSITO Art Club is worth it for the bar alone: the bartender makes an incredible mezcalita with fresh lime. And Cuatro Altos is the espresso-martini stop — a whole variety of them, including a wild clear one — in a huge, easygoing space with a bartender who makes you want to stay. When you want something louder, Patio Bar is the lively one: more of a proper bar hangout, busiest on the weekend. And Uno Bar takes it up a notch — good music, room to dance, cocktails, and a younger crowd. For a more low-key evening, Perro Salado is a pool hall with good, casual beers and no pretense.

A spritz by the pool

Spritz Club, also on Belisario Domínguez, is a small, seasonal spritz and pool bar — friendly by design, with an air-conditioned room inside and a pool just outside the door. Spritzes and wine made with fresh recipes and local ingredients, poured for exactly the kind of late-afternoon refresher this town runs on. Come with friends, meet a few new ones, grab your drink and slip poolside if you feel like it. Live music on the terrace is in the works, and the hours are short on purpose so the service stays good: Thursday to Sunday, 4 to 10.
